A video captured the moment Nollywood actor turned politician, Desmond Elliot called for social media regulation at the Lagos State House of Assembly.
It was gathered that days ago, social media influencer, Dr Olufunmilayo stated that the Lagos State House of Assembly “is developing a bill to regulate and control speech on social media” and that Desmond Elliot “is said to be one of those pushing it”.
Reacting to this, Desmond released a video denying this allegation.
In response, Dr. Olufunmilayo asked Desmond Elliot to release evidence of what he truly said.
He tweeted in response;
“On today’s plenary session, I have reliable information Desmond Elliot blamed celebs/influencers for the carnage and went ahead to advocate social media regulation bill.
The link to the video is https://lagoshouseofassembly.gov.ng/live/
It has been tampered with. Can they pls release the video?
Dear Desmond Elliot Thanks for your quick correction. In the spirit of honesty and transparency, can you please release to the world what you said about celebs and influencers, can you also let the whole world see the video of what you said about social media regulation? Thanks
Dear Desmond Elliot, If the State House of Assembly have no powers on social media regulation, then why bring it up at plenary? Why advocate for something you have no powers over, as a lawmaker? Why blame celebs/influencers for saying what everybody saw but govt wants to cover?
Dear Desmond Elliot This is not a fight. Or a quarrel. It’s a very simple logic.
- Why did you accuse celebs/influencers of “hate speech” today?
- Why did you advocate SM regulation if you have no powers as a state lawmaker?
- Why is the video evidence now gone from the website?
By the way Hope you guys saw the speed at which Desmond Elliot responded to my tweet- despite the fact that he did indeed truly advocate a social media control and attacked celebs/influencers- Did you see the speed? Always learn to speak up. Give these people no breathing space.”
Now, a video of Desmond’s statement at the House of Assembly has now been made public
In the video, Desmond Is seen calling on the speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly to “address certain things” like “the Nigerian youth, the social media, the social influencers.”
“Mr. Speaker, we need to address certain things. The Nigerian Youth, The Social Media, The Social Influencers, All of these are making the narrative that we are seeing today, except we are joking with ourselves. Social media is good but it has Negative impacts.
Let me thank you for condemning the killings and carnage that happened at Lekki. When i went through the comments i could not believe it Mr. Speaker, the curses, the abuses from children and i ask myself, is this Nigeria ? What is going on?
Children cursing, people having the effrontery to enter an Oba’s palace, hold the staff of office ? Culture is gone. Mr. Speaker, in the next 5 years, there will be no Nigeria if we don’t act now.
The youth is not only those who do the peaceful protest, those who have looted and destroyed lives are youths as well.
Go to the elections, if you are tired come and enter government. People are dying. The narrative must change.”
