M.I Abaga – Biography, Life And Other Fact You Need To Know

Born on 4th October 1981, Jude Abaga, professionally known as M.I Abaga, is a Nigerian rapper, songwriter and record producer.

Family Background

M.I Abaga was born in Jos, Plateau State to Pastor and Mrs Abaga, both from Jukun descent of Takum, Taraba state.

Jude has two brothers, Jesse Jagz who is also in the Nigerian and African music scene, and Jason Abaga.

He speaks Hausa fluently because he was born and brought up in Jos.

Education

M.I Abaga attended Baptist High School for his secondary school education.

The singer later attended Calvin College, Michigan, US where he studied Engineering for only a year before he moved on to major in Business and Economics.

Early Career

While in Baptist High School, MI’s mother purchased basic music notations and later, a 7-key mini piano which he used for personal training.

Back then, the singer would listen to tracks from Lauryn Hill, Bob Marley, Sarah Maclachlan, Pablo Neruda, Jay-Z, and DMX.

At some point, M.I delved into poetry and comedy, which didn’t work out well, so he decided to stick to music.

While at Calvin College, the singer always performed at the school’s major hip hop shows and concerts. At one of the shows tagged, HipHopera, M.I performed and came 3rd position.

In 2003, Jude started his music career after his relocation to Nigeria.

He started by producing mixtapes with his friend Djinee which led to the release of the hit single, “Safe”. The song was widely recognized and played on African radio stations and music video stations like MTV Vibe.

Later on, M.I teamed up with his brother, Jesse Jagz, Ice Prince, Ruby, Threadstone, Lindsay, Moses – Elbulk, and E-kelly to form Loopy Music.

After a while, a renowned music label in Nigeria named Chocolate City Company signed M.I Abaga which led to him relocating from Jos to to Abuja.

It was his contract with Chocolate City that launched him into a successful music career. He was later made the CEO of the company by its Chairman; Audu Maikori.

As a producer, M.I has produced and featured on the works of artists like Don Jazzy, Threadstone,Kel, Djinee, Shifi, Jesse Jags, Ice Prince, Ruby, Lindsey, Leony, Wizkid etc.

He also runs a production company, Rytchus Era Productions with his brother Jesse Abaga (Jesse Jagz).

On February 9, 2018, M. I released his seventh studio project titled Rendezvous, a playlist with a style generally different from the regular.

He also released Yxng Dxnzl (pronounced Yung Denzl) on August 24, 2018

On 6th February 2020, MI Abaga announced the end of his 13-year association with Chocolate City and unveiled his new self-owned record label, Incredible Music.

On Incredible Music, he released his 10th studio project, Judah The EP.
