Born on 9th October 1986, Chibuzor Nelson Azubuike, professionally known as Phyno, is a Nigerian rapper, singer, songwriter and record producer.

The singer is well-known for rapping in the Igbo language.

Family Background

Phyno who is a native of Anambra State was born and raised in Enugu State.

His stage name was given to him by one of his high school friends and it was derived from the word phenomenal.


After graduating from secondary school, Phyno studied public administration at the Institute of Management and Technology in Enugu.

Early Music Career

Phyno developed an interest for music production during his secondary school days. Back then, the singer learned how to play the drums and piano.

He also learned to create his own rendition of every recording he heard.

While in studying in University, Phyno started profiting from music during his second year there.

In 2010, the “The bag” crooner started rapping and relocated to Lagos to further his music career. He told the Nigerian Tribune that he raps in Igbo because he respects his culture and loves being natural.

As a record producer, the musician worked with artists such as Timaya, Flavour, Ruggedman, Bracket, J. Martins and Mr Raw.

In 2012, Phyno decided to fully pursue music as a singer and rapper, no more just as producer. The same year, the singer, recorded his debut album, “No Guts No Glory”.

The debut album which features popular singers, including P-Square, Olamide, Flavour and many more, turned out to be a big hit. It was primarily recorded in Igbo and Nigerian Pidgin.

He released the Olamide-assisted “Ghost Mode” as the album’s lead single.

Sputnet Records released the album’s second single “Man of the Year (Obago)” on 23 March 2013.

The album’s 3rd single, “Parcel” was released on 11 October 2013. It was originally titled “Parcel (a BIG Nwa. On 4 March 2014, “O Set” was released as the album’s fourth single.

Phyno’s collaborative album with Olamide, titled “2 Kings”, was released on 1 April 2015.

In March 2019, Phyno announced plans for the release of his third studio album Deal With It. It has been supported by two singles: “Agu” and “The Bag”.

The album features guest appearances from Olamide, Falz, Davido, Don Jazzy, Zoro, Runtown and Teni.

In 2018, Phyno makes acting debut in the movie, Lionheart by Genevieve Nnaji.

He played the role of Obiora, Genevieve’ brother in the movie which has Pete Edochie and Onyeka Onwenu as their Parents.
