Born on July 2, 1991, Damini Ogulu, professionally known as Burna Boy is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, and performer.
Burna boy was born in Ahoada, Port Harcourt to Nigerian parents Mr. and Mrs. Ogulu. The singer who hails from Mbiama in Ahoda West Local Government area in Rivers State is the eldest of three and also the only son.
His Parent raised him in Ahoada and later moved to Lagos State, where the performer completed his basic education.
The musician’s father managed a welding company and his mother worked as a translator.
His grandfather Benson Idonije once managed Fela Kuti.
Burna boy completed his primary education at a Montessori International School in his birthplace.
After that, he relocated to Lagos where he attended Corona Secondary School in Agbara.
Upon graduating secondary school, the African Giant migrated to the London, United Kingdom where he started tertiary school,
However, he later gave it up to return to Nigeria and follow his dreams.
Early Music Career
Burna Boy love for music stemmed from his surroundings. His favorite artiste of all time is Fela Anikulapo Kuti, whose manager happened to be his grandfather, Benson Idonije.
Recall that Benson Idonije contributed greatly to the music industry and the careers of musicians.
Burna boy was also inspired by his father, Samuel Ogulu who was a big fan of Jamaican music, Reggae, and Dancehall.
Mr. Ogulu would Afro Beats every Sunday from the records, vinyls, and CDs they had back then.
Damini was also introduced to R&B by a childhood sweetheart back in the day.
In 2010, the singer began his career when he signed a two-year contract as Burna Boy with an upcoming label called Aristokrat Records.
He wrote his own music and released them. The musician released two mixtapes, namely “Burn Notice” and “Burn Identity”. From his album “Burn Notice” came the hit “Abeg Abeg Abeg”, the heartfelt song “Sweetest Girl ft Leriq”.
In 2012, Burna boy came into limelight after releasing a song entitled “Like To Party.” It was shot and directed by Square Ball Media.
In 2013, the “Anybody crooner released the album, “L.I.F.E.”, which means “Leaving an Impact For Eternity”
In 2015, the rapper released another album, “On A Spaceship”.
Burna Boy also has an EP (Extended Play) named “Redemption” released in 2016 and a myriad of singles.
In 2017, Burna Boy signed with Bad Habit/Atlantic Records in the United States and Warner Music Group internationally.
In 2018, the “Ye” crooner released his third studio album, “Outside” which marked his major-label debut.
In 2019, he won Best International Act at the 2019 BET Awards, and was announced as Apple Music’s Up Next artist.
He also released his fourth studio album, “African Giant” in July 2019. It has been supported by six singles: “Gbona”, “On the Low”, Killin Dem”, “Dangote”, “Anybody” and “Pull Up”.
The album won ‘Album of the Year’ at the 2019 All Africa Music Awards, and was nominated for Best World Music Album at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards.
Burna Boy is engaged to his British rapper girlfriend, Stefflon Don.
