The Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Adamu Muhammed, has disclosed how some politicians plan to use fake police and military officers to rig the forthcoming election.
According to the IGP, police uniforms and military regalia have been shipped into the country to be used by impostors on election day to cause chaos.
Muhammed, who stressed that no security personnel is expected to carry firearms around the polling centres, added that the ban on elites moving around with police orderlies during elections still stands.
The IGP disclosed this on Tuesday at a stakeholders’ meeting on partnership for monitoring, documenting, reporting and prosecuting vote trading during the 2019 polls at the YarAdua centre in Abuja.
He said, “We charge our personnel to be professional and unbiased. Every policeman you see at the polling unit, if he doesn’t carry official tag and name tag is a fake policeman and should be arrested, because we have reports that a lot of police uniforms and military regalia are being brought into the country by desperate people. We also know that there are people that are ready to dress in police uniforms during the elections.”
