Super Eagles captain, Mikel Obi has completed a move to English Championship club, Middlesbrough after passing his medical test on Tuesday, January 22.
The football star who has been playing in the Chinese Super League for the past two years with Tianjin Teda after leaving Premier League side Chelsea where he won two English topflight titles battled injuries since the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia and has put in an effort to get back in top shape.
Confirming the signing of the Super Eagles captain, Head coach Tony Pulis has said ;
“I’m pleased to get him in. He is a man with a lot of experience and quality.
“He has a winning mentality and he wants to be here be a part of what we are looking to achieve,”
He also added that he hopes Mikel Obi can still add a lot to his team, despite playing in China for the last two seasons.
However, Middlesbrough has snapped him up on a six-month deal.
Mikel will be expected to make his debut for Middlesbrough when they take on Newport County in a FA Cup clash scheduled for Saturday, January 26.
Reacting to the news, Chelsea took to their official Twitter page, @ChelseaFC, to congratulate Mikel and wished him good luck at his new club, Middlesbrough.
“Good luck at Middlesbrough, @Mikel_John_Obi!,” Chelsea tweeted alongside a picture of Mikel wearing the Blues’ jersey.
